UOG TOP PICK - Granite Gear Crown VC 60 - Best for Backpacking - We've singled out Granite Gear's Crown VC 60 pack as one of our top recommendations for backpacking - with an internal frame it has excellent load transfer and features designed around backpackers needs - and its only 1kg.
Granite Gear says:
The successor to the cult classic Granite Gear Vapor Trail with upgrades! Introducing the Crown 60 with Vapor Current Suspension technology. Weighing less than the Vapor Trail at 2 lbs 2 oz (1 lb 13 oz with frame removed) the Crown 60 is a top loader with a secure roll-top closure that provides easy access.
The simple lidless design can be upgraded with our optional LineLoc lid.
Vapor Current is the name we gave to our newest suspension. At first glance you’ll notice the ventilation channels molded into the cushy back pad. These channels allow air to circulate from bottom to top taking advantage of convection to aid in evaporative cooling. This facilitates circulation without shifting the pack’s center of gravity away from your back. Beneath the molded foam the VC frame has a full length (all the way up to the load lifters) HDPE die-cut sheet that supports loads up to 35 lbs.
The frame itself is removable so the pack can be used for ultralight loads without the frame. The belt and shoulder straps feature dual density padding and new narrow webbing straps. The shoulder strap has a built in stretch mesh pocket and the belt has the capacity to accept our optional hip belt pockets. Vapor Current packs are fixed (non adjustable) torso packs that come in sizes: Short Regular in women’s models and Regular and Long in the men’s version.
Granite Gear packs should be on your list for consideration if you are more interested in comfort than absolute weight reduction - the Crown VC pack replace their immensely successful Vapor Trail packs - to keep weight down Granite Gear have used a `frame sheet` for the back panel of the pack which transfers the load effectively to the hip belt.
Keeping the weight down to a kilogram with a 60 litre framed pack is no easy task but Granite Gear have done an excellent job and achieved it.
The lidless design closes with a `drybag` type rolltop closure. Keeping large items of gear organised is straightforward with the outer stretch mesh pockets that will take huge amounts of gear. The main mesh pocket will easily take a wet flysheet.
There are virtually no smaller pockets but if you want these the pack takes Granite Gears hip belt pockets as optional extras the `daisy chain` webbing loops on the hipbelt will take a lot of other gear too - such as camera cases mapcases etc.. There are two nifty stretch mesh pockets on the shoulder straps for very small items. The packs are shipped with a Medium Hipbelt with the Short Torso and a Large Hipbelt with the Regular Torso but we have other sizes if you would like an alternative ring or contact us by e-mail with your specific requirements.
The Crown is a superb pack which despite its low weight has the key features you need when backpacking.
