UOG TOP PICK - Montane Ultra Tour 40 Litre Pack - Best for Adventure Racing, Superlight Backpacking and Events - We've singled out Montane's Ultra Tour Packs as one of our top recommendations because they offer a superb range of features and a decent harness suited to ultralight backpacking.

Montane says: Fast, long distance multi day mountain trail pack.

The Ultra Tour 40 is a super lightweight multi day mountain pack. It's unique design features a roll-top closure for fast access to clothing and equipment and large stretch mesh pockets for storage of route maps, water bottles, fly sheets and other essentials. Features a new 'Comfort Vent Back Pad' system which offers superb comfort. The ultra lightweight, minimalist nature of the Ultra Tour 40 makes it ideal for fast packing and ultra lightweight backpackers.

Montane's Ultra Tour 40 weighs 756grams, which is not bad for a 40Litre pack, though it 's a bit on the heavy side compared to some ultralight 40 Litres.  Having said that it mitigates this by having a really good hipbelt, padded back and reasonable shoulder straps with top tensioners. Using these attributes you can get a pretty good fit, especially if you pack your gear with a bit of thought.

The pack reminds us of a GoLite Jam, which weighed about the same and had a similarly good carry for a frameless pack. The feature set is very similar as well, the Ultra Tour has a large mesh stuff pocket on the outside of the pack, which is ideal for wet stuff such as a flysheet or waterproofs. There's a stretch mesh pocket on each hipbelt and further mesh pouches on the shoulder straps that will take Montane's new soft water bottles.

Inside there's the pouch for a water bladder and an exit port in the top centre. As with most superlight packs there's no 'lid' - the top rolls down and clicks into place with two quick release buckles.

No frills but does what it's supposed to

Just got back from hiking the W in Torres del Paine with this pack - carrying 4 day's food for 2 people + stove, 3-man tent, sleeping bag, inflatable mat & pillow, hiking poles and everything else needed for 5 days. It's definitely possible to fit a lot of stuff in, although the straps are ,maybe a tiny bit skinny if you want to really load it up.

Much like the other review, there is a small issue with the back support 'kinking' which can dig in to your back and be uncomfortable if the bag is packed poorly - this appears to be permanent once it's happened. It works best when packed really full, and taking a lot of care to keep heavier stuff off the top unless you absolutely have to access it on the trail.

Straps underneath are pretty short but just about fit around our MSR Elixir 3 when the tent was rolled & packed carefully.

Overall I'd recommend, but take care to pack carefully at all times and hopefully you can avoid it becoming misshapen.

Almost perfect

Last month I was all packed up to walk the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, or so I thought. My pack of choice was a ULA 52Ltr Circuit stripped down to 488g. A packed up for the 12 day trip it weighed under 21lb with 10 days food and fuel. Then I discovered the Montane Ultra Tour 40 pack. Back at home I packed the Ultra Tour 40 with all the kit I was taking for the P.C.P. trip. It just swallowed it up and felt fine on my back. Needless to say I used this pack over the ULA as it has the riser straps, which I find make a difference when on multi day routes. What a performer on the route, loads like a 50+ litre pack. I did find the back had quite an arch in the centre between the vented pads on the upper back and lumbar region.Tried all ways to correct it to no avail, but it does not affect the carry once on the back for a few minutes. It now has a permanent kink there. At 750g it's not the lightest kid on the block but has all the capacity and pockets where I want them, riser straps and not too sweaty on the back.
