Exped's Lightning packs are designed to be light without scrimping on the harness, which is fully adjustable and comfortable with good load transfer to the hips.
Versatile and mobile. The Lightning pack is made for "Fast & Light" adventures. An extremely lightweight top loader with roll-top closure. The unique T-Rex suspension system minimizes contact points. Pack body can be fully compressed, enhancing load control. The suspension system shines with simple and quick adjustability and superb mobility of hips and torso.
Exped's Lightning packs are what many people has asked me for over the years - a simple pack that nevertheless has a great harness. The harness on the Lightning is well padded and well constructed to ensure there is good weight transfer to the hipbelt with solidly padded shoulder straps - its also back-length adjustable by sliding along the vertical frame.
There are remarkably few compromises, there are still hipbelt pockets, compression and external load straps and stretch mesh side pockets. There's no conventional lid - the top closure is effected using a drybag type roll and buckle closure system that fastens down the sides of the pack, which also has a small organiser zipped pocket.
Inside there's nothing much to it just a further small organiser pouch. I carried a 60 Litre Lightning around Chile and I can vouch for its comfort, the material is a mid weight fabric - so its more durable than some 'ultralight' packs and not as tough as a 'conventional' pack.
The 2014 model differs from the previous model in just one respect, the compression straps on the side of the pack now pass through the pockets rather than sitting on top of them, making them easier to use. When testing this pack I found the compression straps to be unnecessary anyway and took them off, but I can see that others will prefer the new model.
