Baptized by fire the Leopard series packs were really put to the test by gear testers extraordinaire Justin “Trauma” Lichter and Shawn “Pepper” Forry in their epic trek through the Himalayas.
The Leopard VC 46 packs feature our ultra-light Vapor Current suspension system. Compatible with our new Crampon Holder Gear Loops and our weight saving Vapor Airbeam frame the Leopard VC 46 is at home both as a minimalist backpacks or a fast-and-light alpine pack.
Vapor Current is the name we gave to our newest suspension. At first glance you’ll notice the ventilation channels molded into the cushy back pad. These channels allow air to circulate from bottom to top taking advantage of convection to aid in evaporative cooling. This facilitates circulation without shifting the pack’s center of gravity away from your back.
Beneath the molded foam the VC frame has a full length (all the way up to the load lifters) HDPE die-cut sheet that supports loads up to 35 lbs. The frame itself is removable so the pack can be used for ultralight loads without the frame. The belt and shoulder straps feature dual density padding and new narrow webbing straps. The shoulder strap has a built in stretch mesh pocket and the belt has the capacity to accept our optional hip belt pockets. Vapor Current packs are fixed (non adjustable) torso packs that come in sizes: Short Regular in women’s models and Regular and Long in the men’s version.
The VC suspension system is excellent - within its carry-weight range its very comfortable yet comes in at a very low weight. If the Crown VC is the seminal lightweight pack then the Leopard is the Alpine version of it built to take Alpine hardware and fitted with a floating lid. Remove the lid and its not much heavier than the Crown (although it is smaller capacity).
In all you can reduce the weight f the pack by taking off the lid (144grams) and replacing the framesheet with the Airbeam frame saves a further 90grams - this brings the weight of the regular pack to 990grams - whilst not the lightest 46 litre pack its certainly one of the most comfortable.
