It's great to see Montane venturing into the world of Cuben Fibre, if you haven't heard of this its a superlight, super-tough non-woven fabric that's been gradually introduced into outdoor products at the high, ultralight end of the market.
Montane's Hyper Tour 38 is their first product to use it, its a 38 Litre minimalist pack with a decent harness weighing in at just 500 grams. Although it is frameless the hip belt, padded back and top loader straps combine to give a comfortable carry, especially if you pack it thoughtfully.
Its not without some features, there are hip belt pockets, a stretch mesh shoulder strap pouch and the means of carrying gear externally on the pack front. Inside there's a velcro loop for a hydration bladder and there's an exit port just below the roll top closure.
Cuben Fibre is a waterproof material and the seams are taped so the Hyper Tour is fully watertight meaning you can save weight on drybags. Montane provide a folded sheet of closed cell foam with the pack which is designed to fit into two pockets inside and would provide padding on the back panel. The foam is very flimsy though and its hard to fit it into the pouches without damaging it.
I think the foam must be to sleep on aka a 'torso mat' - its hard core though.
Given its weight, the fact that its waterproof and that it has the proven Montane harness makes it a special pack, ideal for multi-day ultralight backpacking and racing.
