Montane's Grand Tour 70 pack is brimming with features such as dual compartments, side access to main compartment, pockets galore and a proven comfortable harness system. It achieves all this while still remaining lightweight.

Montane says:

For such a lightweight pack, the Grand Tour 70 is revolutionary in its load carrying comfort. Created for the celebrated, ultra long backpacking routes of the world, this pack is the pinnacle of large load carrying rucksack design. With its 70 litre capacity and with careful planning, it can enable long, unsupported stints in the wilderness; perfect for routes with limited resupply potential.

Featuring ‘hockey stick’ side water resistant zips for separate compartment entry and large external stretch mesh gear bellows, this pack allows for efficient kit organisation whilst out in the field; and enables prompt and easy access to key items. The Grand Tour 70 is a lightweight and comfortable workhorse wilderness backpack.

Montane's Grand Tour 70 Litre pack builds on the success of the 55 Litre version, and essentially its the same harness with a bigger and redesigned bag, although they have added some stability straps linking the main bag with the hipbelt. These are especially important for larger loads and I found the 55 Litre pack would roll a bit when fully loaded.

The hipbelt has also been beefed up with thicker, softer padding - again consistent with carrying larger, heavier loads.

We think the 55Litre pack is too heavy, with more attention to features that you don't really need adding weight then to creating a truly lightweight load carrier - the Grand Tour 70 however gets closer to the 'lightweight' category and is a good choice if you want the extra features that it provides, such as a separate compartment at the bottom of the pack that would take a sleeping bag - and the side access zipper giving access to the main compartment without loosening the lid.

Montane have retained the pair of zipped mesh pockets on the outside of the pack which are slightly more usable than those on the 55Litre version because they are bigger, however the classic large single pouch that you find on many backpacking rucksacks works better for us - there's a reason why it appears on so many packs.

Ultimately this is a comfortable lightweight load carrier that would suit people who want a feature laden pack that with use will keep them and their gear organised, and yet still manages to get into the lightweight category. We've included a review of the 55Litre pack below because it includes comments relative to the 70 litre version.
