UOG TOP PICK - Gossamer Gear's G4-20 Ultralight 42L Backpack - We've singled out Gossamer Gear's G4-20 as one of our top recommendations because it is amazingly lightweight for the 42L capacity. At over 100g lighter than any competitors bag around this size and with a good range of features this is a fantastic pack.

Gossamer Gear’s G4-20 Ultralight 42 Backpack is the newest addition to the line-up of the American ultralight specialist. At only 704g this is a truly lightweight pack, and while it does favour a minimalist approach, the G4-20 is a functional and comfortable option for the long-distance trekker.

Gossamer Gear says:

A modern nod to a vintage classic. A tip of the hat to an OG pack. We took what made the original "G4" so popular and roped in a gang of new fabrics and materials to create a minimal do-it-all frameless pack.

While Gossamer Gear's G4-20 Ultralight 42 Backpack is perfect for the minimalist hiker setting out on longer distance treks, the G4-20 is first and foremost a versatile pack with a bevy of features that make it an attractive companion for extended trips. This is a spacious pack, with a large main body complemented by a variety of stretchy side and front pockets for easy access to on-the-go essentials. The flexible nature of the G4-20 is its greatest strength – webbing on each side is perfectly suited to an ultralight shell or a pair of gloves, and the larger drop pockets on each side are ideal for water and snacks. The front pocket is remarkably deep, and proved perfect for carrying gear that is best kept isolated from your kit, such as a dirty footprint.

The G4-20 is also surprisingly burly, given its light weight, capable of carrying 12kg comfortably and 15kg at its limit. The Robic ripstop nylon used throughout is cleverly panelled to save weight without compromising on durability, and the backplate that doubles as a sit mat is an excellent innovation that balances class-leading comfort with year-round versatility. This isn’t purely a lightweight pack – features such as the sealed zip on the external valuables pocket, and the wide, well-padded straps are evidence that Gossamer Gear have managed to make this a comfortable, mid-volume pack for every outdoorsman.

Surprisingly Spacious, Comfortable

Old time backpacker here & my first frame-less pack in 45 years. I've being really cutting down on the weight I'm carrying recently (age is catching up!) & I bought the G4-20 for use on long weekend trips in place of my Osprey Exos 58 to save another 400g. Carrying sub 10kg all up I've not no issues with it on a 25mile 2 day mountain trip. Excellent quality & it looks good too. I can get all my tent & waterproofs on the easy access mesh pocket, the big side pocket is good for water storage, & the main compartment has a surprising amount of room. I would certainly consider it for longer trips now that I have tried it out.

Awesome

I bought this for the Pennine Way, wild camps etc. Its weight is around 12kg when loaded with kit and water. Pretty awesome bag to be fair. On long through hikes it is easy to adjust on the go, to move weight from hips onto shoulders and visa versa. I also did some trail running on the route and the bag was stable and did not bounce around. The roll- top rolls down and clips really far down as I have now got my base down to 4kg. I removed the extra side clips to save a few grams :-) I'm a hobbit sized person, and found it really easy to access pockets when carrying, and also no issue with it being too low down on the hips etc. I have thrown this bag around all over the place, and is in way better condition than my trousers and boots after the trip. Use a normal bin bag / black bag as a liner to save weight. The padding on the shoulders did me proud too, I was worried that this would be a point that would maybe rip or wear away fast, but so far it's holding out very well. Of course, the back seat pad is very handy, decent on the back, adds shape to the bag, and is comfortable to sit on. The price is nuts, I too mulled this one for a while, and my conclusion is: defo the star of my whole kit.
