UOG TOP PICK - Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor - We've singled out Sierra Designs Flex Capacitor as one of our top recommendations because it is one of the most versatile packs with a capacity that can be adjusted from 40 to 60L. Some great design features round off a fantastic pack.

The Flex Capacitor is a modern classic, renowned for its light weight, class-leading versatility, and innovative features. This is the 40-60L version, the perfect workhorse for everyone from the weekend warrior to the veteran thru-hiker.

Sierra Designs says:

Meet the pack that does it all. The Flex Capacitor family of packs feature adjustable volume to handle both short and long hauls, and a Y flex suspension system that carries above their weight class. With three sizes in a 25-40, 40-60, and 60-75 L capacity, there is a flex pack to fit your needs. A bucket lid with a stash pocket closes everything up, while dual stretch pockets on the shoulder straps and side of pack cover shove it needs.

Sierra Design's Flex Capacitor 40-60L Rucksack is the ultimate in versatile, adaptable load-carrying, and the flexibility offered by the expandable volume make this the one-pack solution for any adventure. Built around a Y-Flex suspension system, the Flex Capacitor is surprisingly burly for its low weight, with a well padded lumbar and a wide hip belt to better handle heavier loads. The pack itself is constructed primarily from 100D fabric, guaranteeing durability and water-resistance while keeping the weight to a minimum. 400D Nylon has been used in the base of the pack, to better protect against rocky campgrounds and long-term use.

The expandable volume of the Flex Capacitor is its greatest strength. Where most expandable packs do so with a longer body, the Flex expands its circumference instead, making it a far more comfortable pack when fully opened. This also provides a far greater range than most of its competitors – while many similar packs only manage 10L of expansion, the 20L offered by the Flex Capacitor make it a pack that can happily accommodate everything from long weekends to weeks on the trail.

The U-shaped lid access to the pack body is a beautifully simple solution to the heavy lids featured on many similar packs, and makes for a rucksack that is refreshingly easy to pack and surprisingly spacious. The Flex Capacitor veritably swallows gear, while still providing dedicated space for a hydration bladder and keeping a small zipped essentials pocket in the roof, ideal for navigation kit and snacks. The finishing touches are all present too – there are two ice axe loops, a pair of roomy hip belt pockets, and four stretchy mesh pockets; two on the sides of the pack body complemented by one on each shoulder strap. All-in-all, the Flex Capacitor 40-60L is the ideal solution to the age-old question of pack size, capable of withstanding the harshest conditions and comfortable under the heaviest loads.

Brilliant simple backpack

Got the 40-60L version to replace two old backpacks and take on anything from a 1 night wild camp to two weeks backpacking. The design is simple and that's good. Other backpacks have way too many straps and stuff. I immediately liked this one. Has everything I need. The hip pockets are massive and the zip opens easily using one hand. The two mesh pockets on the shoulder straps very useful to store sunnies and my phone. The top lid pocket is a bit small but the top zip is sturdy and the lid opens to give full access to the whole interior. The mesh bag for the water reservoir can be taken out to save a little bit of weight. Side mesh pockets are big enough for a 1L Nalgene bottle and I can take it out for a sip whilst walking. The big pads on shoulders and hips make it very comfy to carry and still get some air onto my back in between. Carried a full pack on a hot day and didn't get a soaked back. Got the birch coloured pack and it looks pretty unusual and the fabric seems pretty sturdy. Brilliant, simple, light and sturdy no frills pack that will last me for a very long time!

Fantastic bag that ticks all the boxes

This was my first proper bag upgrade (going from an older bag that, it turned out, was way too small for my back). I was slightly hesitant at the simple design (four external pockets, one single top pocket), but found this bag to be incredibly versatile and a offered great utility. The innovative straps for increasing the size/shape of the bag are wonderful, and I could still attach for example, my sit pad to the outside, as well as keeping my heavy stuff at the top by making the bottom straps tighter to stop things slipping down. The main side pockets are perfect for an OS map and snacks and I found them easy to reach into without taking the bag off. The hipbelt pockets are also perfectly sized for wallet/phone/compact camera and can hold more than I expected. Similarly the two drinks holders are wonderful for holding drinks - or as I used them, with one having the hose for my bladder folded up (to stop it swinging in front of me), and the other to put my phone in when taking photos but not wanting to put away properly. The frame and hip belt are incredible, for the first time my shoulders didn't ache after a walk (yay for a bag that fits)! The bag's design, with chunky cushioning on your lumbar and shoulder blades is wonderful too - yes those points got sweaty, but I was amazed at how cool and dry my back remained from not having contact with the bag. Overall I absolutely love it - and the black is a lot nicer in real life than it looks online.
