UOG TOP PICK - Buttermilks 55 Litre Rucksack - Lightweight for Backpacking - We've singled out the Boreas Buttermilks 55 Litre Rucksack as one of our top recommendations for backpacking - although slightly heavier than other packs it delivers exceptional comfort with an internal frame and excellent harness system.
Light and uncomplicated. These were designed for those who want to move really, really fast and those who think it’s just plain crazy to carry heavy things around in the woods. A great blend of suspension, structure and weight conscious materials.
The first thing you notice about a Boreas' Buttermilks pack is the stiffness and substantial nature of the back panel - it feels a lot heavier than it actually is - but its the defining feature of the pack. Attached to this is a wide and supportive hipbelt and shaped shoulder straps. The harness achieves impeccable load transfer to the hips making this a comfortable pack for heavier loads.
Boreas packs are not made to be ultralight, they are put together to be tough - so the fabrics used are mid range nylons which add to the weight of the pack but deliver durability. There are some good features, such as the hip belt pockets are quite large and shaped so they are really easy to get in and out of.
Ideal for backpacking, there are large side stretch mesh pockets and a large one on the outside of the pack, as well as a small zipped organiser pocket which is ideal for stuff like wallet, park passes, other paperwork etc that you need handy.
There's no lid, just a drawcord closure with a top webbing strap to hold everything down. You need to ensure you close the top and roll it before securing the strap - this will keep the water out. There's the usual hydration pouch inside the pack and side compression sacks.
The frame is removable which reduces the weight of the pack considerably - but its such an integral part of the carry system that we would only recommend using the pack without the frame for very light loads indeed.
The pack is supplied with its own pack cover which weighs 150g and is not included in the quoted weights. This pack is an excellent choice for someone who wants comfort, backpacker practicality and durablility.
