UOG TOP PICK - Gossamer Gear Mariposa 60 Rucksack - We've singled out Gossamer Gear's Mariposa 60 as one of our top recommendations because it is the lightest weight pack with a large 60L capacity. Lots of features show off this pack as being practical rather than minimalist for such a low weight.
Light, tough and plenty of storage options there's a lot to like about the Gossamer Gear's Mariposa 60 Rucksack. Designed for big trips in the hills carrying all you need in comfort.
Gossamer Gear says:
Our bestseller. With a removable internal frame, load lifters, and 7 built-in pockets, this is a gear-hauling workhorse that weighs in at just 2 pounds.
This award-winning pack’s roomy main pocket holds your shelter, clothing, sleeping pad and food. There are seven extra pockets - one mesh for wet stuff, two easy-to-reach for water and high-energy snacks, and the rest for whatever else. Made of custom 100 and 200 denier Robic nylon fabric, this tough, light pack delivers a very comfortable carry even when overloaded with 35 pounds of gear.
Gossamer Gear's 2020 Mariposa 60 Rucksack is still one of our lightest 60 litre rucksacks. This updated version sees a new, pre-attached belt included in the set up along with a change in the padding used in the straps and foam back. The 60 litres is not just the main compartment but also includes the multiple external pockets so that is worth keeping in mind. The pack is still made from surprisingly tough and durable 100-200 denier nylon which is impressive given the super low weight.
The bag gives the appearance of a roll top enclosure but you get a pair of clips to narrow the entrance then the top folds down to be closed with compression straps to keep your pack contents secure. The fold over top has a zipped pocket. It might be lightweight but the shoulder straps and hipbelt have plenty of comfortable mesh padding. The hipbelt provided with this pack is a medium size so, if you need a small or large size it will need to be bought separately.
Rather than the conventional set up of 2 side stuff pockets, the Mariposa has one massive side pocket which can easily accommodate a light-weight tent. The other side of the pack has 2 smaller pockets useful for stashing items you want accessible on the move. There is a very large mesh pocket idea for carrying wet waterproofs or a tent flysheet. There is a lashing loop which could be used as an ice axe holder but I'm not convinced how effective it would be. To keep weight to a minimum there are no side compression straps on the Mariposa so it will be important to pack it well to keep the load stable.
