A handy gizmo to make eating your food pouches more comfortable, and more efficient. Packs small and weighs little.

Big Sky International says:

With a lightweight, packable design, the Insulite pouch lets you bring hot or cold meals with you on the go. Whether you’re packing a lunch for a hike or rehydrating a meal while camping, the reflective non-woven fabric and PrimaLoft insulation keep your food at the right temperature. At just 1.5 ounces, the pouch is easy to carry and won’t add much weight to your pack. Finally, it features a Velcro top closure and elastic compression straps.

We've tried Big Sky International's Insulite Pouch and it does retain the heat for longer and seems to slightly speed up the rehydration slightly as the water is maintained at a higher temperatutre for a longer time.

Does the job but cheaper more versatile options out there

I saw this but it was out of stock for a long while. While I was waiting, I tried using a fold up lunch bag with foil lining on the inside that I got for less than £5. It doesn't have foil on the outside but a red nylon material. What I found was that it also made a reasonable sit mat - I am all in favour of things having more than one purpose and saving weight by no longer needing a separate sit mat. It probably wont last as long using it to sit on too but hey it was cheap. So when I found one of these Big Sky pouches I could buy, I thought I would give it a go. Maybe it would be better than my cheap option. In fact it does just as good but no better a job at keeping food warm while rehydrating. Maybe it would be better at keeping things cold than the cheap option but I am not so sure and not really looking for that anyway. And the exterior doesn't feel as hard wearing as my lunch bag option. Its just a few grams lighter than the lunch bag but really only a few. So in summary - this works, but you can get as good or even better (more versatile if you use it as sit mat) options elsewhere for a lot less money and not much more weight - and the cheaper options may work out lighter if you leave a sit mat at home that you would otherwise have bought.

A great addition to my gear list

For a while, I've been using my own home made insulated food pouches made from foil covered roof insulation. They worked pretty well but weren't that durable - the foil tape holding them together splits over time. Having bought a Big Sky Insulite pouch, I'll not be bothering to make any more of my own. It packs smaller and is just as light. I've used it on a couple of treks now and it's performed really well. Some freeze dried meals need leaving for 10mins or more to rehydrate so by the time you come to eat them in cold conditions they can be a bit cool. The Insulite pouch retains the heat extremely effectively and possibly even speeds up the rehydration as the water temperature is maintained for longer.
