Northern Lites say:

The Backcountry is the snowshoe of choice for mountaineering, backpacking, hiking, and general use over uncertain terrain. At only 9” wide and 30" long, the Backcountry provides all the floatation most people will require in any snow conditions with easy walking. And at only 46 oz. per pair, the Backcountry weighs less than the 22" and 25" models of ordinary aluminum frame snowshoes.

Comes with Northern Lites TruTrak binding system for sturdy traction through all conditions.

Northern Lites snowshoes have a fantastic reputation in the US, which is why we're proud to offer them in the UK and Europe.

Great for winter backpacking

First time using snowshoes, bear in mind. Invaluable on a 4 day backpacking trip in the Cairngorms, easy to fit and adjust.. Excellent for mixed heather and snow, found they fell off about once every 2km which isn't major and resolved by giving a quick tighten every km or so. Was carrying a 50lb rucksack so 105kg in total.
Will carry them on every winter trip in future due to light weight. Would prob try a diff model if tackling steep slopes regularly, great for the passes tho.

Northern lites Snow Shoes

I have used snow shoes of many types for over 25 years. Most are far too heavy. These shoes are the best I have seen so far and are about half the weight of their main competitors. This has not been achieved by skimpy construction. The quick fit binding system works well which is unusual for a gimmicky feature. They are also available with buckle fixings which are slower but more secure. The only snag is the long tail design is a bit cumbersome for Europe. Highly recommended.
