UOG TOP PICK - Roclite 286 GTX - Lightest Goretex Boot in the World - We've singled out Inov-8's Roclite 286 GTX boots as one of our top recommendations for trekking and backpacking - being so light they won't slow you down - yet they're remarkably comfortable and a revelation if you're not used to trekking in lightweight footwear.

The new & updated version of this lightweight boot features a more flexible Gore-Tex membrane, giving you more freedom of movement and ultimately a more comfortable shoe.

Inov8 says:

The World's lightest GORE-TEX boot offering a reinforced toe box that protects the foot from unexpected terrain. GORE-TEX technology ensures the foot is kept dry. Designed for mixed terrain, a studded sole with deep cleats ensures superb grip in muddy conditions.

There is an old adage about a 1lb of weight on your feet is worth around 5lbs on your back - so an easy way to reduce theoretical weight (and energy expended) is to lighten the load on your feet.

Although born from the off road running market Inov8 also make excellent multi-activity shoes like these Roclites - this model has the highest cushion level in the Inov8 range and we've used them for long distance walking and trekking - they really do reduce effort compared to traditional boots.

Dare I say 'too light'?!

These are wonderfully lightweight boots and very comfortable in most terrain. In particularly gnarly rocky ground or when rock-hopping the relatively thin soles can be uncomfortable.
My main gripe is the waterproofness/robustness. After only around three long-weekend highland camping trips with 35L sacks they are letting in water at the instep, even when just walking on dewy grass, and probably a few other places to a lesser degree. I believe this to be caused by things like gorse and anything sharp or prickly on the ground. They go straight through the lightweight shell material and can be felt through to the foot, clearly puncturing the membrane in the process.
I have to admit that I think these take lightweight too far - I wasn't asking anything out of the ordinary from these boots and they have disappointed.
