Hydrapak Ultraflask 500 Review

Used extensively by Cairngorm Treks throughout the Cairngorms and surrounding mountainous areas, Winter 2017 – Spring 2018.

The first aspect of the Ultraflask you will notice is just how packable this water bottle is when collapsed, fitting neatly away into your rucksack or hip belt. Described as being for use with running vests and packs, we quickly adapted it to suit mountain walking. It has a long tube which can be adjusted to suit the users need. Weighing in at a tiny 42grams we took it down to an even lighter 34grams by removing the tube completely and just using the bite valve cap.

The large 35mm opening lets you fill the Ultraflask easily and once the lid is secure we noticed no leakage even when tossed around on the side of our packs. The bite valve re-seals after each sip preventing drips or spillage and after extended use still appears to be working perfectly. A fantastic feature is that the Ultraflask collapses as you drink so eliminates the sloshing of water when stored away and on the move, which can be very irritating.

Our Verdict

The Hydrapak Ultraflask 500ml will never replace our usual more robust choice of water bottle but certainly plays a role neatly packed as part of our kit ready for use. Although designed mostly with runners in mind, for us it plays the role of an extra container for times when surrounding water sources are minimal and carrying extra fluid is a must. With its light weight and collapsible nature, it tucks away neatly into our packs but is ready for action when needed.
