Rab's Kinetic Alpine Jacket is a super stretchy and comfortable waterproof jacket blurring the lines between hardshell and softshell with the revolutionary Proflex fabric. The softness of a soft shell and fully waterproof with a useful feature set.

Rab says:

Perfectly combining the soft, flexible nature of a softshell with the protection and durability of a hardshell, the Kinetic Alpine is made from Rab’s own Proflex™. Contouring to your body shape it wicks away any sweat generated on steep ground, making it’s easy to forget you are wearing a waterproof until the showers roll in.

Honed for the alpinist, particular attention has been paid to the features, ensuring it has everything needed for long days in the mountains. Reinforced ceramic print overlays in high wear areas removes the need for bulky patches, increasing durability without hindering stretch. While a helmet-compatible hood, YKK AquaGuard zips, fully taped seams, adjustable cuffs and hem ensure high functionality for the mountains. Light and highly packable, a small stuff sack aids easy storage in a pack or clipped to harness.

Rab's Kinetic Alpine Jacket is a super stretchy and comfortable waterproof jacket blurring the lines between hardshell and softshell with the revolutionary Proflex™ fabric.

The Kinetic Plus jacket has the high breathability and soft feel of a 'softshell', but is totally waterproof with a hydrostatic head rating of 10,000mm, its even got taped seams like a hardshell, perfectly good for all but the very worst conditions and you can expect to wear it as your hardshell.

Feature-wise it has two large hand pockets with water resistant zips high enough to be used when wearing a harness or hip belt. There is another large internal chest pocket. The main zip is YKK Vislon with an internal waterproof flap - this means its made from plastic teeth with a coated waterproof tape - these zips are softer and more pliable than nylon coil zips (which are used on the pockets). The hood is helmet compatible with with a wired brim that can be cinched in by the simple toggle on the neck. The waist adjustment is also simple with a cord and button to press to release the tension.

Very versatile

Wasn’t too sure about this jacket when it first arrived due to the light weight but it is proving to be a very useful and versatile piece of kit. I have been wearing it in northern Spain all winter and on cooler days with a puffer gilet underneath. Breathability is very good and the shower proofing is good for a few hours. I am now on El Camino de Santiago and the jacket is performing very well. I have snagged it a few times on brambles and thorns without any signs of damage. Jacket shifts sweat on long uphills and doesn't overheat. Rain proofing is fine but with really serious rain I wear a rainproof poncho on top as the jacket can take some time to dry. The hood works well and is adjustable. The overall fit and finish is excellent. Definitely a three season jacket for my intended uses.

This jacket appears to be well made, quiet and comfortable. I have only worn it in moderate rain but it performed well. It packs down very small; you can roll it into the hood and then put it in the stuff-sack (18cm x 10cm). I purchased a size large and am 175cm tall and of medium build.
