Granite Gear Crown 2 60 Litre Rucksack

Granite Gear's Lutsen series of backpacking rucksacks are fully adjustable and care stacked with features important to a backpacker - hip belt pockets, large mesh stuff pockets, hydration compatible and a vented, comfortable carry.

Granite Gear says:

Introducing the Granite Gear Lutsen series, a highly technical, easily adjustable, mutli-day pack series that allows you to “go where you gotta go”. The Lutsen Series packs offer a large capacity and our innovative Re-Fit air current suspension system that boasts Re-Fit fully adjustable torso length, and Re-Fit fully adjustable hip belt. So go ahead, get a custom fit!

The panel loading design on the Lutsen 35 makes it a breeze to pack or unpack, and allows access to items near the middle of the pack without taking out all the gear above.

When Granite Gear produce a new line of backpacking rucksacks we take notice - why? - because they know how to make a rucksack that's comfortable, they are absolutely focussed on keeping its weight down and being backpackers themselves they know a thing or two about what features are important on the trail.

When we saw photographs of the new Lutsen packs we thought they looked 'boxy' and didn't fill us with confidence - when we saw them in the flesh though we changed our view completely. These are excellent packs - coming in at around 1.4Kg versus our favourite 'Crown' at 1Kg they are not the lightest - but we think you'd struggle to find a pack with this feature set at this weight.

For starters it has a floating lid (which can be removed to save 74 grams) with a couple of pockets in it. Lots of us Europeans like this on our rucksacks because it helps keep things organised, but the Lutsen packs are set up for use with or without it - if you leave it at home the roll over drybag style closure does a good job in protecting the contents. We like the permanent hipbelt pockets, one of which is virtually waterproof while the other is a fine mesh.

The back panel has a pre-formed sculptured foam pad which minimises the contact points on the back to deliver a degree of ventilation, this sits against a tough polycarbonate framesheet which provides excellent weight transfer to the hips. Watch the video to see how both the hipbelt and shoulder straps can be adjusted.

We think the Lutsen packs are really good, and bridge the gap between a lightweight minimalist backpacker and a more traditional feature laden pack - all the sparkle without the weight.

We singled out the 45 and 55L versions of the Lutsen as Top Picks, we didn't include this one, not because its not a good pack - just because at 35 Litres the overall weight is more significant on a pack this small.
