Our Verdict
Closed cell foam is a fantastically light material, it cushions, is waterproof and provides a high level of insulation from the ground. Sleeping mats made from it are easily the lightest thing to sleep on, so if weight is the key consideration then these are the mats for you. The foam used in the IceMat is a higher quality than used for general purpose mats and will retain its thickness for longer.
The other extremely flexible property of closed cell foam is that it can be cut to any size or shape easily with a knife or large pair of scissors. This means that if you really want a mummy shaped mat then it can be trimmed to size and shape and the extra grams discarded.
The Advance Camp Ice Mat is a very wide mat so not practical for backpacking use - but brilliant for its intended use - very wide so there's no danger of rolling off in the night - alternatively it could be used as a double if you clutch each other - make sure your partner is 'clutchable' though!
Don't forget closed cell foam is also cuttable - so with this width you can customise a mat to a small ish tent - or cut it into the corner - the possibilities are endless.
The Foam Ice Mat can also be usefully teamed up with the Self Inflating IceMat.
