MSR Mutha Hubba HP
This lightweight freestanding 3-person tent weighs less than the Mutha Hubba tent, yet offers greater coverage in the tent canopy for added protection and warmth during unexpected, early-season snowfalls or persistent coastal winds. We’ve achieved this increased protection with lighter weight by utilizing the latest fabrics and technology to bring the Mutha Hubba HP tent down to an impressive 6 lbs. 4 oz. (2.85 kg). Along with the fast and easy pitching hub and swivel pole design, the Mutha Hubba HP tent is light enough for two, big enough for three and strong for almost anything you’ll find this side of winter.
Our Verdict
A high quality 3 person tent with excellent headroom. We like the hubba range of tents because although they may be considered on the heavy side in their full form they have the fast and light option of flysheet plus footprint, which in this case brings the weight down to 2237g, thats a lot of comfort for only 750g each person.
The 'hub' system maximises stability for minimum weight, the centre pole enters two hubs, one at each side of the tent, two further pole sections radiate out from here, crossing the outer poles to make the whole structure very rigid (see inner tent photo).
Mutha Hubba HP or Mutha Hubba? - The closer groundsheet will shed weather better - only worth it if you have seriously bad weather - the solid inner over the mesh version is notably warmer so better for winter conditions. The extra expense of the HP version may not be justified on the modest weight saving alone.
