Our Verdict
Montane have built into the Black Ice a number of key design features that increase the performance of the down, selective box wall construction allows the down unrestiricted volume in which to loft - this means it provides more insulation for a given weight, and there's little risk of coldspots.
With this weight of down fill Montane could have gone for the conventional large baffles, but instead have created the mini baffles, quilt construction to ensure the down remains where it should.
The hood has a velcro volume adjuster, wired peak and shockcord tightener, it can be rolled to form a collar and secured with a strap. The waist drawcord and hem drawcord work together to ensure a comfy fit when its cold outside.
Its a first class down jacket because of the quality and quantity of the down, and its exceptional build quality.
