Granite Gear Fabric Details
Cordura®—Not the Cordura you remember! You remember it as rugged, textured and stiff as a board at 5 below, usually in forest green, red or blue in 500 and 1000 denier versions. Today’s Cordura out-performs every other fabric we’ve tested. Cordura’s “high tenacity yarns” make everything from the 30 denier Sil-Nylon we use in our Air-line and White Lightnin’ Tarps to the 420 denier we use on our pack bottoms stronger in terms of tensile strength and abrasion resistance. In our quest to make gear that is light and tough, sheds rain and snow, plus stays supple in the cold, we have returned to our roots, but with a fabric that shines in the present.
210-D Cordura Nylon—This tightly woven fabric has tensile strength and abrasion resistance characteristics equal to nylon fabric twice its weight. Combine that with excellent coating and DWR and you have a super tough fabric with an amazing ability to shed snow and water and stay supple in the cold.
420-D Cordura Nylon—Everything our 210-D nylon is times two!
30-D Sil Cordura Nylon Rip-Stop—Super-light (1.1 oz) to the point of being translucent, yet plenty tough for stuff sacks and tarps.
70-D Hybrid Cordura Nylon Rip-Stop—Silicone on one side, urethane on the other for excellent tensile strength and the ability to hold a seam that is under a lot of stress, which often happens in a backpack!
Schoeller®Dynamic with NanoSphere® Technology—This highly breathable stretch fabric is exceptional! It’s supple, resilient, never pills and is amazingly abrasion and cut resistant. The NanoSphere finishing means it will remain water-repellent longer, and absorb much less water than the best DWR finishes. We use it wherever a stretch fabric is called for, like on our stretch side pockets and where your body meets the pack; on the back panels and on the inside of the shoulder straps and belt. We use it with a waterproof coating as well on the front stretch panel of our Access and Latitude Packs.
Hypalon—A super heavy duty fabric with a tear-proof scrim and a super tough outer coating. It resists attacks by everything from abrasives to caustic chemicals. You’ll find it used in our tool attachment systems as well as at the connection point on the end of our interchangeable shoulder straps.
210-D Bias Seam Tape—This tape is cut from urethane coated 210-D fabric, the same stuff we use in our Rock Solid Compression Sacks. Since it’s a coated fabric it tends to deflect water from running into a seam, unlike traditional binding tapes that act like a wick, pulling moisture into your pack.
RiRi Aquazip— is a water repellent zipper thanks to a coating of tape that is applied under the teeth to prevent any damage or peeling. The teeth are directly injected on the coated tape to maximize the strength and are overlapping each other (offset tooth) to prevent water penetration. All the components are made of thermoplastic materials to address abrasion, strength, durability and performance without adding extra weight.
YKK Zippers—Still the best! You’ll see the new water resistant YKK zippers on more and more of our gear. They eliminate the need for zipper flaps, offering easier entry and improved weather resistance.
National Molding Duraflex® Buckles—Simply the best! The best designs molded with the best plastics. You can count on Duraflex® buckles to work in the harshest, coldest environments.
